Giota Konstantopoulou

Giota Konstantopoulou was born in Kalavryta in 1931. On December 13, 1943, German soldiers forced all male inhabitants of the city who were between 15 and 65 years old to Kappi Hill. The remaining inhabitants were confined in the local school while the Germans set fire to the town, which then spread to the school. Giota Konstantopoulou, who was 13 years old at the time, was imprisoned there with her mother and two sisters while her father and two brothers were shot on Kappi Hill. A total of 499 people were killed in the Kalavryta massacre and 13 survived with serious injuries. Including the neighboring villages, 696 people were killed by the Germans in the course of what was referred to as “Operation Kalavryta.”
